Hello, my name is Emmarie Hodge and I’m a 30-year-old pagan from West Virginia! I like to write about magick and cultural commentary in the form of articles on the esoteric and modern society. I also write poetry.
The style of my writing is informative, casually academic, and optimistically gothic. This contrasting current creates a strong push and pull in my writing as I examine the world with a critical, but joyfully curious lens.
I’m the managing editor of Astro Pagan, a witchcraft and paganism publication, as well as Dark Verse, a gothic poetry journal on Medium. …
This morning, I looked at my article reading list and realized that I had 229 “saved for later.” But later hadn’t come for the last month as I could only read about ten articles a day if I pushed it.
At that rate, it would take me twenty days to get through it all.
My article reading list had become an unmanageable and exhausting chore. Which is why I took a few minutes this morning to delete every single article on the list.
I’m much happier for it.
But deleting the articles on my reading list didn’t solve my problem…
We’ve heard a lot about the blockchain and cryptocurrency over the last few years, and recently there has been a new trend: NFTs.
NFTs are “non-fungible tokens” and they’re essentially a digital contract identifying ownership over a digital item. Most NFTs that people have heard about is digital art sold to buyers for the prestige of it.
This is a confusing and somewhat ludicrous phenomena. Most who are old enough to understand and afford NFTs remember a time when piracy was standard on the internet. You didn’t stream music, you downloaded it illegally.
Currency on the blockchain is one thing…
I wasn’t a natural artist. When I was a child, I spent most of my time playing outdoors. One of my favorite things to do was jump off a high deck and pretend I could fly.
Even though I had an active imagination, it was mostly reserved for dangerous stunts with my best friend and accomplice. But when she wanted to go inside and play with Barbie dolls, I almost died of boredom.
Is this supposed to be fun? I had thought while brushing the blonde hair of her doll and wondering why I had to pretend it could talk.

When you’ve begun to manifest good into your life, you realize how powerful you really are. For some of us, that good is tempting to share with others.
But it’s one thing to increase your vibrations high enough to attract a better future for yourself and quite another to manifest for someone else. What if they have a low vibration? What if they reject any fortune that comes their way? What if they’re under spiritual attack?
These are all good questions, but whatever doubts you may have, it’s important to remember that your thoughts determine what you attract in life…
Your subconscious is a powerful tool, and many aren’t making intentional use of it in their creative work. The subconscious is the culmination of all your experiences and knowledge archived in your mind. When you have a sudden flash of insight, that’s because you’ve triggered a suppressed memory of your subconscious and created a new neural pathway from an inspirational trigger.
This unexpected burst of creativity motivates people to make something novel, like a piece of art, a story, or a song. …
Tarot is a language of symbolism. Embracing this symbolism not only allows you to have a richer experience when you read tarot, but it also helps you to learn and remember the individual meanings of each card.
But learning each card individually and separate from the whole deck will cause you to miss important relationships between the cards. That’s why you need to learn about a major aspect. One of the major aspects of tarot that readers must learn are the elements.
Ancient Greeks developed an understanding of the five elements: earth, water, air, fire, and spirit, to describe the…
Whether you have a job or a career, one that you hate or one that you love, work can be difficult. We face so many stressors and become so preoccupied with our struggles that we lose sight of what matters.
This leads us to feel anxiety about work and experience no fulfillment in what we do. When this happens, our well-being for the rest of our life suffers as well.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. …
We love the smooth swish of the page when we open a new book for the first time. It’s like stepping into a portal and journeying to another world where we find ourselves in fantasy realms slaying dragons.
There are hundreds of pages in every book and hundreds of moments where we lose ourselves to the furthest reaches of our imaginations. There is no destination so far apart from our everyday experience as that of reading a book.
Books matter. And bookstores? They were the promise of a pristine future. But because of online shopping, they’ve almost disappeared.
Growing up…
